WALDWICK, N.J. - Authorities say an experienced police officer in northern New Jersey has died after a tractor-trailer rear-ended his unmarked police car.
Waldwick Police Officer Christopher Goodell was 32 years old.
Bergen County Prosecutor John Molinelli says Goodell was operating radar to look for speeders on Route 17 when the tractor-trailer veered into the shoulder and struck his unmarked police car, pushing it into a retaining wall just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday.
Goodell was a five-year veteran of the department.
The prosecutor says the truck driver wasn't injured. No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.
Police Chief Mark Messner says Goodell was a Marine Corps veteran and a proactive officer. He's survived by his family and a fiancee.
