Hmmm...... I wonder where it came from? A Patriot, I'll bet. I think he always wore his hat while driving the RMP. I used to work with a guy who also would wear his hat driving his personal car back and forth to the relieving point! BUT--- He taught me a lot about 'the job' and I will be forever grateful to him for that.

When I came OTJ my car man told me, during daylight hours when going to or from work, no hat and left shoulder down below the window hiding the patch," "cause you ain't a cop till you get to work".

I remember a school crossing in the Sixth, 620's post I think, that had an automatic 1/2 hr OT after the day tour (when we went around the clock). The best part was that was for one kid.

Footpost 405a E. Rockaway. Sunday days I had St. Raymonds. Six hour crossing. 15 min break between each Mass. NO Meal!! By contract, yes......... but you didn't dare call the desk for the car man to relieve you. Unless you wanted to be miserable going forward as a permanent footman. It was a great footpost..........besides that.

I remember having to write the address of the call (assignment, heaven forbid you said "job" in Nassau) on your newspaper instead of getting on the MDT

Speaking of Stop Signs, remember having to unfold and fold before and after school? I remember that they even had padlocks on the chains. What a drag dropping those signs every day at the crack of dawn, especially if you had 5 or 6 sets of them your post.

For those who don't remember or were not born yet, Humphry Pennyworth was a fat guy on a bike in the Lil' Abner cartoon, and we had a couple of fat guys in the old Fifth on the parking details, who looked like him, hence the moniker fit a few of them....

8 - precincts - Not paying into health ins - longevity - I remember when the mere mention that the PBA was going to the Leg made-them sweat. Tour changes any time any way - Other depts being green with envy - flag day - and single pick vacation days on flag day.

I remember an old time boss, "The Rocket", breaking my ba$%s for allegedly not taking the shortest route from my post to the SH to get gas.
