Pennsylvania police may be closing in Friday night on the suspected killer of a state trooper.
A home in the Poconos Mountains was surrounded by officers late Friday after exchanging fire with someone inside, CNN reported, citing an unamed government official.
Police have been searching for Eric Matthew Frein since Sept. 12, when Cpl. Byron Dickson was ambushed outside the Pennsylvania State Police barracks in Blooming Grove.
There were reports of gunfire in a remote heavily wooded area, near the home of the parents of the heavily armed survivalist.
State police closed leading to the house and were searching the woods. Residents of the area were told to stay in doors. It was the second night of heavy searches in the area.
A Pennsylvania State Trooper searches wooded area at the Dunmore Cemetery during the funeral of Pennsylvania State Trooper Bryon Dickson on Thursday.
The 31-year-old who managed to evade capture after allegedly killing a trooper and critically wounding another "has his head shaved on the sides with long hair on top," wider than a Mohawk, L. Col. George Bivens said at a press conference Wednesday.
"Investigators believe that this change was made as part of the mental preparation to commit this cowardly act," said Bivens.
A manhunt composed of hundreds of law enforcement officers spent its seventh full day Friday searching for the gunman, as authorities warned that the accused killer may try to strike again.
That warning came as a Pennsylvania school district canceled classes to keep its students safe.

The Pocono Mountain School District, where Frein lives, closed all schools as the manhunt entered its sixth day.
Frein, a survivalist with sharp shooting skills, had previously expressed a desire to kill police officers and commit mass murder, Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said earlier this week.
"He has very strong feelings about law enforcement and seems to be very angry with a lot of things that go on in our society," he said.
