In order to prevent incidents like this we have to be able to predict the possibility that it might happen. We must be able to put ourselves into his shoes and understand why he did what he did. I don't think I will ever be able to understand why a parent would murder their own child. It's just not in me. So no, I don't think its preventable.

Why the hell would you put that as a title? Two young girls had long lives ahead of them. Their longevity was lost when they were murdered. Very sad, R.I.P.

I also think the title of this thread is misleading. I say that because this is such an important topic that truly needs to be addressed.
What happened is an absolute TRAGEDY and even though I cannot fathom ever feeling this helpless, mental illness and depression are issues in our profession that we all know about but they are rarely addressed properly. Yes, it's easy to say he was a mental aided but just a few months ago this guy could have been riding in the post car next to you. We ourselves have had peers that have taken their own lives (thank God they haven't taken anyone else with them). One of them was a friend of mine that I often find myself saying "Why?". I know we have Employee Assistance but I myself feel it is more reactive than proactive and there should be more outreach done by all involved. We have members who have or are presently struggling through divorce, financial hardships, family issues or just plain depression. Yes, it's easy to just knock them or blow them off as crazy or weak, but don't we have a responsibility to help our brothers and sisters around us.
I say we do.

You don't have to be OTJ or recently retired to have life throw you some unexpected curves........ George, Nicely said. You have to get off the bench first, ask for help or guidance if you need it. Many complain yet do nothing. And know others who are struggling
