The shooting in Bay Shore came after the suspect, Denzel Brown, 21, of Amityville, was involved in a possible theft at the electronics store, at 1851 W. Sunrise Hwy. at about 7:46 p.m., police said.
Brown was hiding in the parking lot and tried to run from an officer who attempted to stop him with a stun gun, "which was ineffective," police said.
The suspect fled into the neighborhood and was able to get into a couple's running car with two children, ages 4 and 6, inside, police said. He began to drive away -- with only the children inside, police said.
According to a news release, the officer then "opened the car door and attempted to remove Brown" from the car.
"The officer is ordering the suspect out of the car," police spokesman Lt. Kevin Beyrer said, according to News 12 Long Island. "He's refusing. He's in the driver's seat. The car's running. The officer fires one shot. The officer is then able to open the driver's side door and then struggles inside the car in the driver's seat with the suspect."
That's when the officer tried to use the stun gun on the suspect again, Beyrer said.
When it was ineffective a second time, "the officer then fires a second shot at the suspect."
Beyrer said assisting officers then responded.
Brown, 21, of 109 Maple Dr., was taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore where he died during surgery, police said.
Police could not immediately say exactly what Brown allegedly stole or did inside the store, but officers responded to a 911 call about a "possible theft" from store personnel.
The suspect was "hiding outside the store" when police arrived, and as one officer approached him, he "fled through the parking lot and the officer chased him on foot."
That's when the officer first attempted to use the stun gun, police said.
Then the suspect "attempted to open the doors of both moving and parked vehicles that were in the parking lot and along Nevada Avenue," the release said.
The suspect then attempted to steal the "running car from a couple while two children" were in the backseat.
"He opens the rear door, where the two young children are sitting," Beyrer said. "He climbs across the two young children," to get into the driver's seat. "The woman panics, exits the vehicle, and she's screaming that there's kids in the car."
The man was not yet in the car, police said.
The confrontation between the officer and suspect ensued, and it ended in the fatal shooting, police said.
On Nevada Avenue in Bay Shore, where the carjacking and fatal shooting occurred, neighbors said they were shocked.
The victims weren't home Monday morning, two neighbors said. Nobody answered the door at the home where neighbors said the family lives.
Marletta Stevenson, who lives across the street, said she was watching bull riding on television when she heard a gunshot.
"I thought it was a loud firecracker; I didn't think anything of it," said Stevenson, 75. "Then detectives knocked on the door. I said, 'Yeah, I heard a shot.'"
Stevenson said she was surprised that it happened in her neighborhood.
"It's just tragic. It's tragic," Stevenson said. "He lost his life for what? There's people mourning him, and it's sad."
The investigation is continuing.
