Louisiana Deputy wounded in ambush, directing trafficA St. Charles Parish, La. Sheriff's deputy was wounded in an apparent ambush Thursday morning. Cpl. Burt Hazeltine was directing traffic in a school zone near the intersection of Louisiana Street and Highway 90 in Paradis around 9:15 a.m. when he was suddenly shot multiple times, according to WVUE-TV. Hazeltine was able to return fire and, following a brief shootout, a deputy and a passerby were able to apprehend the suspect. The 15-year veteran of the force was transported to LSU Interim Hospital and officials told the news station that he was alert at the scene and talking to colleagues. Investigators said the deputy, who was wearing his bulletproof vest, was shot three times and suffered wounds to his face, arm and chest. While the vest likely saved his life, doctors said that Hazeltine may lose his eyesight. One of the bullets penetrated the Hazeltine's lung and he was taken into surgery for bleeding in his chest. He is currently listed in stable, but guarded, condition. Officer.com will provide more information on this story as it becomes available.
