Age: Just turned 26
I am in the finishing steps of the process for both NYPD and Nassau. My investigator for NYPD told me its a 50/50 chance for hitting the upcoming July Academy and my Nassau investigator told me there looking into a September academy which I would be in once I'm done with the process. As of now I am in a good position to becoming an officer, it's just a matter of who do I go with. I understand the whole situation with NIFA and I know I would be risking a wage freeze most likely in 2017 or 2018.
Could you guys give me your opinion on why I should go with one department over the other?

For as long as I can remember, the NYPD has been referred to as "the job that loves to hate you back". They have a lot of great Cops there but they have the worst bosses, the worst politicians, the worst Media and the worst residents. Even with all of the well founded complaints you see here, the NCPD is head and shoulders above the City when it comes to working conditions. Yes there are contract problems but the City is worse, much worse. Their contracts usually result in all zeroes. Nassau has had freezes but they're still not as bad as what the City has had to put up with. The Nassau residents, for the most part, support the Police and you won't have to deal with the numbers of wacko Libs, hipsters, skells, drug dealers and mental cases that the City guys see on a daily basis. Nassau doesn't have a giant New Years Eve party, a Puerto Rican Day Parade, a Haitian Day Parade, a Muslim Day Parade or any other similar BS. In Nassau you will be able to buy your meals at work and not worry about getting poisoned. I know Nassau has a lot of unhappy campers when all is said and done, it's still a better job. The only problem is that Nassau can not be trusted when it comes to hiring dates. They have a terrible record when it comes to hiring new classes. It seems as though the politicians cancel classes just to screw with people. Keep that in mind and have a back-up plan. Keep in mind also that NYC is on the ballz of it's azz. They have a history of laying off Cops by the thousands when they get in financial trouble. Just like the NYC Politicians of the late 60's and early 70's, DeBlasio has been systematically draining the coffers with giveaways to his buddies while at the same time destroying the Tax base and forcing Companies and people who actually pay taxes out of the City. He isn't going to get away with it for much longer. Good Luck.

What Wiz said plus the city government is under Communist control. The sky is the limit on what damage those leftists will cause, especially in the Police Department . You may need the services of a therapist to stay sane over the next 22yrs. If things get bad enough, their next election could clean out the nest but I wouldn't count on it.

Become an electrician or a plumber. People will love you when their lights go out or their toilets don't flush.
I've told my grand kids the same thing...........

JMHO, but the one good thing the NYPD has over Nassau can be trivial depending on you. An advantage to the NYPD is simply the amount of police officers they hire and have on at any one time. Therefore, they are hiring frequently and many. Also, due to attrition, movement and promotions are much greater in the city simply because of the sheer numbers. If you plan to work your way up through the ranks, the city promotes far more people and often than Nassau. There are a lot of opportunities to go to special commands in the NYPD (i.e., Highway Patrol, ESU, detective bureau, Aviation, Harbor Unit, etc., etc., etc.) again due to the sheer numbers. If you plan on pushing a sector car for 20+ years (and let me make myself clear in that there's NOTHING wrong with that!) or don't care if you get promoted or assigned to a special unit, then this consideration is nil. That's why I said it depends on you.
The bottom line, though, is this: I've known a ton of NYPD cops in my lifetime who would give their left arm to get to Nassau or Suffolk. I don't know any Nassau or Suffolk cops who are pining to go to the NYPD. Only the other way around. You take that for what it's worth.

I spent ten years in the city I miss the guys not the job. Ask yourself if you want to work in Brownsville where you are viewed as the enemy or wantagh where kids want to play catch with you. Ask yourself if you want to work in bed Stuy and have kids point their fingers at you in the shape of a gun and say they want to shoot you, or work in Oceanside and watch people wave at you. You have the option of working Harlem where your guaranteed to walk a foot post and have "air mail" delivered on cue or work Bethpage and watch the mail being delivered. Understand one thing my friend your not viewed as a helper, savior, friend, or hero in NYC your viewed as an occupying force. Here in Nassau by and large the people truly like the police and it is a world apart from NYC. Don't get me wrong the county job has its problems but they pale in comparison to NYC. City hall is run by a Sandinista and the city council has former black panthers and left wing nut jobs on it, do you really think anything good is going to come out of it?

Thanks guys. I've always had my choice, but I just wanted to hear it from someones else's mouth. My plan isn't to stay in a sector car my entire career, I could even move up the ranks since I have my bachelors degree. Honestly though, I would prefer to go into specialized units in Nassau or NYPD like Spec Ops, ESU, etc.. I understand it's difficult to get into a specialized Nassau Unit, but hopefully with all my training I've been doing and my hook it shouldn't be to hard. Just some wishful thinking.

I spent 8 1/2 years in the city in bklyn north and then just made it out here last class and it's the happiest I've ever been . The. Clientele , the way the bosses and the public treats you and the work chart is unreal here . My stress level has lowered so much just from less bs pressure from the higher ups makes such a difference . I took a huge paycut but I don't regret it at all. Great cops you'll meet in the city but there's not many better law enforcement jobs than ncpd . You'll regret it if you don't take it . People would give their left nut for this job . If it didn't work out the tests in the city come out all the time

You should really focus on getting through the academy then learning how to be a good cop before thinking about ESU and hooks. You might work a sector for a while and find out you absolutely love it, or you might learn about different units on the job that sound interesting.
