I do not get it. There is no way the job or any job is going to buy a tactical vest for every single member. So they do this instead. They try to give us something that can help if the world starts to go to s--t. And yet people are complaining about it. WTF? And as far as heavy vests not stopping rounds that is not true. So tell you what. If there is an active shooter you can choose to stay outside and let kids be slaughtered or go in. And I can g'damn guarantee people will be putting that vest on and be glad of it.

This means nothing without long guns and REAL active shooter training. I'd rather have an AR than this vest which, by the way, doesn't cover that much (and I'm on the skinnier side). Just another waste of money. I don't know if a rifle could stand the environment of a typical post car in NCPD. They would have to be sealed in an armored case strong enough to defeat the average careless Cop. Equipment that occupies a PD trunk or even the glove box, leads a very hard life. I agree, they wouldn't be able to last in the trunk or in the RMP. They would never been cleaned or properly maintained. An easy solution is to let guys bring in their own. Have guys carry a specific type (.223) and qualify with it. As far as the order...I'll believe it when I see it.

“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.”
― Heraclitus
Ask for volunteers to be trained to go fight bad guys with rifles. How many would sign up? If they don't volunteer, what's the point in giving them a rifle?
ASK for volunteers and train them. They will fight.

Nassau and Suffolk PD are unique in that the sector cars relieve out on post. I think patrol Cops on most jobs around the country, change shifts in precincts or HQ. From my TV watching days, I remember the show Adam 12 depicted Cops starting their shifts, having a shotgun issued, from an armory at the Precinct, at the beginning of each shift. I know, it's only a TV show, but I think the series had LAPD Cops as technical advisers and they strived to make the show as realistic as possible. In order to guarantee that the equipment remains serviceable, I think that relieving on post would have to end and that constant inspection of this new equipment would need to be implemented. Otherwise, relying on a heat damaged vest that was crushed by a spare tire or an AR15 gummed up with coffee and a Slurpee could let a Cop down in a time of dire need.

better yet....if you want to carry an AR-, you can bring your own and be qualified each year and be indemnified by the county..this way you will keep it clean and in good shape and will be willing to use it, when your life is in danger....but that will never happen because the county is too worried how you look to the public..thats why there are no cages in the cars nor shotguns in the front like most other depts have...makes the county look like an unsafe place to live....just like the brass targets ( buttons) on the older uniforms, and wearing your hat ( they want you to) at any incident...nothing is done tactically, all is done for show, like most of what the county govt does..all show no go....

That is a better idea. Buy your own m4. Have the department qualify and indemnify you.

Have to agree with you. In a day where it seems the job is doomed, the job does something positive and guys are still bitching. I know people like to air their gripes here but come on now - it's a step in the right direction. If you don't want to or you refuse to go in then so be it, then wear the damn vest and helmet as you sit in your car- you'll have to live with yourself! As someone else said, I wouldn't hold my breath for the long guns. Think about it COST of the long guns, COST of the initial and annual training, SECURITY of the long guns....I don't see it happening. And for those saying bring in your own - are you SERIOUSLY that delusional??? Do you think that will EVER happen? If you do then you probably think we're getting our longevity next week along with all the retro we are owed! Admittedly the job is hurting but those of us that are still here and will be for some time, we need to start being more positive about ourselves and watch out for ourselves and our fellow brothers and sisters in blue. There are those out there that have declared war on us and the "Silent Majority" is just starting to speak up. We have a duty to ourselves, our families and our co-workers that EVERYONE goes home EVERY night! Stay Safe and watch your six!!

The long guns have already been purchased. They are not being given to everyone and are being paid for out of asset money. I have just as many complaints as the rest of you but asset has done awesome by us. We wouldn't have anything if it wasn't for them.

Nice try! No I'm not new at all and I'm well aware of guys bringing in their own long guns but- 1- No one ever used them and 2- As you say "if they were allowed to" - Well last I checked they weren't, aren't and I don't think for a moment they will ever be. And Fartman after a statement like that you HAVE to work for Asset. Sure if it wasn't for them we'd have all closed shop by now. While its true they do a great job, last I checked they're still part of our job and anything that we've been fortunate to get from them is JOB approved.

I was talking more about the funding aspect of what they have been able to provide. They have provided us with some tools to do the job that the county itself would have never spent money on.
