I'll stay here but this site needs to be password protected like the old site. Right now anyone can read what's here without registering. I've been following this site without logging on since we switched.

I'm going to stay here, but I think this site should be an MOS ONLY site!!! They already have a Rant. It's the NYPD Rant. I don't go there often but as I recall, anyone can view their Rant but only members can post. That's pretty much what we have now. Yes, they do supposedly verify ID but from what I've seen, they're not very thorough. You can't tell me some of those a-holes are real Cops. Even if you mean a Rant for Members of the Force, it's a lot more difficult than it sounds. Who are you going to allow? Will it be NCPD members only? Will Village guys be allowed? Will NYPD and Suffolk be allowed? We already have Civilians who contribute and haven't been a problem. Do we kick them out? Is it for active members only or can retired guys join also? Once you decide who you're going to allow, how do you verify their eligibility? You're asking for an awful lot from unpaid volunteers.

Wiz is right. NYPD Rant (TheeRant) is set up the same as this one. The only difference is that members must be approved and that requires an ID be E mailed to the Administrator before their membership is activated. I know many Cops would be reluctant to do that.
This forum is new. To gain new members, it is important that they are able to view the content of the forum. If viewing is restricted, some will join just to see what is there but many will not bother if they must register first.
I have a few options that can be used to limit what is viewable to non members. Right now they can view all forums. Another option is to create sub forums viewable only by members. There are many tweaks such as the little NCPD patch you should be now seeing next to the PDCNRANT URL in the address box. If there are problems, I can address them as they come up.
There should be no problem if we conduct ourselves in a proper manner. No real names, confidential Police business, improper language etc. Just like the guys in the street, act like there is a camera recording everything you do. An internet forum is much like that.

Just to add, right now this site is pretty much known only to members of the old Rant. Hopefully, word will spread through the entire department about the existance of this forum. Members of the old Rant are welcome. All department members, their families and friends are welcome. All members of other departments are welcome.

Hey Mr. Wizzard, it just a thought, policeone.com has a pretty good system in place.......I think that everyone would agree with me when I say there should be NO "Trolls" allowed here (not that they were allowed on the old site)

P180, Please understand. I'm not being critical. I don't go to PoliceOne for the simple fact that it's difficult for retired guys to sign up. As a retired guy, I feel I would have little to contribute anyway. I'll never know for sure. I can't read it. I understand your desire to have an absolutely private and closed forum to discuss what's really pissing you off, a place to discuss things away from the prying eyes of Supervision, IAU, the dooshbag Media and the rest of the Public. This is not that forum. (Supervision and respectful civilians are welcome here) I don't think it can be. Running a forum, even one like this can be a big headache. Limiting access to a certain group requires that someone assume responsibility for administering those limitations. We're lucky we have guys who are good enough to volunteer and run this thing for nothing. Why make their lives more difficult.
No argument on the trolls. We've had a few in the past. They were never tolerated and Coots always did a good job of getting rid of them. It's going to be easier now that he has complete control. He used to have to contact the Admin and get him to give the idiots the boot. Coots can now do it by himself. If it does become a problem, it can be dealt with. Otherwise why worry about it. If you want to discuss something that doesn't belong in an open forum, you can always use the PM system.(or go to a PBA meeting)

Hey Coots, I like the patch. It shows up in my tabs and bookmarks also.
