Cops: State Trooper Hit By Car on Northern State Parkway
7/20/13 - A state trooper was struck by a car Saturday while conducting a traffic stop on the Northern State Parkway., police said.
The trooper, assigned to the Lake Success barracks, was standing near a 2013 Ford Fusion SE while getting the driver's license and registration, according to a state police statement. He was on the shoulder of the eastbound Northern State Parkway, west of the Wantagh State Parkway, police said.
Police said Michael O'Rourke of Hicksville was driving a 2007 Cadillac CTS in the far left lane and attempted to move into the center lane, where vehicles were already slowing due to the emergency lights of the trooper's car.
Police said the Cadillac struck the rear of a 2012 Nissan Juke in the center lane, causing it to spin out in the roadway. The Cadillac continued onto the shoulder and struck the stopped vehicle and the trooper who was thrown in the air and landed on the ground next to the two vehicles.
The trooper was conscious at the scene and transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow where he was treated for his injuries. He is expected to make a full recovery, state police said.
The two female occupants of the Nissan Juke were also taken to NUMC for treatment of minor injuries. The driver of the Ford Fusion had a minor injury to his elbow but did not go to the hospital and his passenger was not hurt.
Police said O'Rourke refused medical treatment and was taken to State Police Valley Stream and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by drugs and unlawful possession of marijuana.
