Mangano Breaks Ground for Construction of First Precinct in Baldwin

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today broke ground for construction of a new First Precinct facility for the Nassau County Police Department in Baldwin.


Baldwin, NY - November 3rd, 2013 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today broke ground for construction of a new First Precinct facility for the Nassau County Police Department in Baldwin. The construction will bring a modern, cutting edge building to the police department while addressing the concerns of the surrounding community, including the preservation of an historic house and keeping access to Harrison Ave. open to the public. Construction is expected to last 18 months.

County Executive Mangano stated, “My administration has worked in close partnership with the community to ensure that a new First Precinct is constructed in Baldwin and serves as an asset to the community and police department alike. Construction of the new First Precinct will save taxpayers $21 million over previous plans put forth by my predecessor.”

After working closely with the community during the design and planning of the project, the decision was made to keep Harrison Avenue open. The street, which runs south of Merrick Road and is at the corner of the site of the new First Precinct, is an important outlet for the community.

In addition the Kellogg House, on the corner of Harrison Avenue and Merrick Road, will be preserved for future generations to enjoy. During construction, the house will be used by the construction company as offices and the area used for overflow parking to keep parking on residential streets to a minimum. The garage will also be preserved on the property. To obtain more property, Nassau County is also purchasing the Huntington Learning Center, located on the west side of the First Precinct.

The new precinct will be a three-story building and include community access space for more outreach to the surrounding neighborhoods.

So, they bought the Kellogg house for a million for the extra room, now they aren't going to use it...excellent idea!! I also heard that there are no provisions in the plans for a garage on the site so the 1st pct cars have to go to fleet for any service...this is Nassau County thinking at its finest!!!

Back in the early 70's the window air conditioners on the second floor were such a poor fit that in the winter we would put morgue sheet over the window to stop the drafts. They would ballon out like the parachute ride in Coney Island! It was like working in a medievel castle back then...Even the floor in the crapper on the second floor was "sponge"…

The best part of this story is that the property the county bought where the Historical building is was purchased for well above what it was worth as the property was appraised at 800k, the county paid well over a million for it and i heard it was closer to 1.2 million. Then the county bought the learning center on the west side of the existing precinct. Now they are going to rip down the existing garage knocking out the fuel pumps in the process..... but wait it gets better, the fuel oil tank is also right in the vicinity of all the construction so the county most likely will rip them out too... guess what the precinct will not have any heat. County planning at its best. When will it all end, these guys could screw up a wet dream.

Not sure where the construction is, but the oil tank is on the east side of the building, just outside the summons room window. That's easily fixed by putting an above ground one in and running the fuel line to the burner.

I didn't see O'Reilly there either. He still has my vote I just thought it was bad that he was the only delegate not there.

O'Reilly was in FLA with sick family member all week - After winning the election Ed's going to Disney I guess
