Victor Politi, Nassau County's acting police commissioner, has been selected as chief executive of the Nassau Health Care Corp., which runs Nassau University Medical Center and other facilities that serve the poor.
Craig V. Rizzo, chairman of NuHealth, which operates NUMC, told hospital staff members Wednesday morning in an email that Politi had been selected after "after an extensive search and due deliberation.
Rizzo called Politi "exceptionally qualified for this position. Dr. Politi is a Nassau County resident with deep community ties and over 20 years of health care experience. His multifaceted background makes him the perfect candidate to bring NHCC out of its financial struggles and into a profitable institution."
Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano asked NuHealth's former CEO, Arthur Gianelli, to resign in November so the county could search for new leadership.
Politi, a former Nassau police surgeon and attending physician, was appointed as interim police commissioner last year after Mangano forced the resignation of then-Commissioner Thomas Dale, after revelations he had ordered the arrest of a witness in a politically charged case.
Politi previously served as the director of emergency medicine of St. John's Queens Hospital, where he also was president of the medical staff.
He also served as medical director and executive vice president at Cornerstone Arts Center Hospital. Before his appointment as acting police commissioner, Politi was deputy county executive of public safety. He oversaw the county Department of Health and the Nassau County medical examiner's office.
"He is an attending physician right here at the Nassau University Medical Center, which provides him with a deep relationship to our medical staff and medical needs of Nassau County residents," Rizzo said. " . . . His past experience not only involves health care and administration, but government, finance and labor."
