Two Shot And Killed in Hempstead
Emergency personnel work a possible hostage situation after two men were shot on a residential street in Hempstead on Monday, May 5, 2014, Hempstead Village police said
Two men were fatally shot Monday in Hempstead Village on a residential street where a hostage negotiator and special operations officers have been ordering a suspect in a house to come out, authorities said.
The shooting happened about 1:15 p.m. on Belmont Parkway near Greenwich Street, said Mark Matthews, deputy chief for Hempstead Village police.
A man who was transported to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow from the scene has died, Hempstead police said Monday evening.
The body of the other victim could be seen lying on the lawn of a Belmont Parkway home. That street and nearby ones remained cordoned off as residents began returning home from work, and others on the street were ordered to stay inside their houses.
"This is the Nassau County Police," an officer shouted in Spanish and English several times shortly after 5 p.m. "We need the person who lives at 105 to come out with your hands up."
Hempstead police Lt. Frank McNamee said officers homed in on the house after someone was seen running inside after the shooting.
Police are trying to "secure" the house before entering, he said.
"What they want to do is determine if anybody is in the house, and they have to set up special communications," McNamee said. That might be through phone or social media, he said.
"I don't know if anybody's in the house and if that person that might be in the house is the shooter or not," the lieutenant said.
Nassau homicide detectives were called, along with a Spanish-speaking detective, all trying to piece together what happened, Nassau and Hempstead Village police said.
Village of Hempstead Trustee Luis Figueroa was at the scene. He said the mayor and deputy mayor had stopped by as well.
"It's not good," said Figueroa as he went back to his car which was parked on Oakmont Avenue. "This is a quiet neighborhood with working class families. It's a good neighborhood. Bad neighbors."
Oakmont Avenue was filled with curious onlookers.
Lucie Constant, 65, who has lived on Belmont Parkway 13 years, stood at the corner of Maplewood Avenue and Olsen Place waiting to get the clearance to go home.
"I went to the market, to the doctor," she said, "and I come back and I can't get back inside."
As of 12 am this standoff is still ongoing
