EXCLUSIVE: Disgraced NYPD chief approved for disability pension for cancer related to 9/11 attacks
Thomas Dale, who was forced to resign for using his influence as police commissioner to arrest a witness in Nassau County, will receive a tax-free disability pension after convincing NYPD doctors that Ground Zero exposure caused his illness.
A retired NYPD chief has been approved for a tax-free disability pension related to the 9/11 attacks after he was forced to resign in disgrace last year as Nassau County’s top cop, the Daily News has learned.
Thomas Dale, 64, has cancer and convinced a panel of NYPD doctors that the illness resulted from exposure to toxic Ground Zero and has rendered him disabled, sources said. It is unclear when the illness was diagnosed.
The full pension board will vote Wednesday on Dale’s pension, and if approved, he would pocket an estimated $199,000 annually — tax-free.
Dale, a 40-year NYPD vet, was canned in December for using his influence as police commissioner to arrest a witness in a politically motivated case in Nassau County.
Dale was the NYPD’s chief of personnel in 2012 when he left with a “service retirement” to take the post in Long Island.
Eligible cops have to prove they were at Ground Zero within 48 hours of the attack, or subsequently spent 40 hours working either south of Canal St., at the city morgue or at the Staten Island landfill where debris was sifted for human remains.
“I wish the chief well, but a lot of other cops suffering from cancers as a result of 9/11 are not getting approved for disability pensions,” said lawyer and pension expert Jeffrey Goldberg.
“Chief Dale responded to Ground Zero on 9/11/2001 to defend our country and was exposed to numerous cancer causing toxins,” said Roy Richter, president of the Captains Endowment Association. “The disability law is one way the city acknowledges Chief Dale’s heroism and compensates him for the years of chemotherapy he has endured.”

Getting bounced out of "the counties" hurt his feelings after being on "the big job"...he needed it to make him feel like a big boy again. What a scam. All of a sudden he's too disabled to work?! Wonder what the case would have been if he didn't get caught playing pocket pool with mangano...

Wonder what the case would have been if he didn't get caught playing pocket pool with mangano... There are two sets of rules for 3/4's:
Big bosses always get it, aka NYPD Chief of the World Johnson for "hearing loss" at a Madison Square Garden Concert back in the day
Cops have to fight tooth and nail for legitimate disabilities.
Just calling it like it is...

And that's why you need to use your sick time when you don't feel well. THEY are going to get theirs. YOU have to get yours.

You ain't kidding, a Sgt I worked with was wrestling with a perp and his knee was totally blown out, he came back after surgery because he loved the job. Two months later gets pinned in an rmp accident and basically blows the same knee out. Comes back limping 6 months later and puts his papers in, well 3 x and many years later he still didn't get 3/4s because of some technical glitch with the Drs paperwork stating he had minor knee injuries prior to coming on the job. As far as I know he is a Lt in some detail somewhere. Great guy great boss, sucker for the job.
