I really hated the Belmont racing season back in '58. On the 12x8's ( except Sundays) I along with another foot post guy and car 501 had to go and place wooden saw horses on all the streets south of Belmont at 0400 hours so parking was not allowed on those streets. On the 4x12's I had to put the light on Plainfield Ave & Hempstead Turnpike on flash and then go into the street at Elmont Road (also on flash) and PUSH the traffic away from the track towards Franklin Square at 1700 hours till all was cleared up. I don't ever remember the guys assigned to the traffic detail ever going into the track on the 8x4's. All security was handeled at that time by the Pinkertons who were inside the track year round and the NCPD detail was just for traffic into and out of Belmont parking lots. Wonder when the NCPD started to go inside the track. Any one remember?
Hope California Chrome takes the Triple Crown this afternoon!!!

I hated Belmont but for a different reason. After I got married I lived in Queens Village, a few blocks west of the Cross Island. During Racing Season parking was prohibited on all of the residential streets. We had no place to put our cars and it was a real PIA.

Heard on the news (here in Florida) that Belmont traffic was a disaster. Was this another well planned event by the County? Can't believe this is the same NCPD I retired from....

What traffic? The Ministry of Public Information (Newsday, News 12) has non seen fit to inform the locals of any problems caused by an inadequate Police presence. They're still too upset by the PBA demonstration at First District to bother with any other News Stories. Besides, "What difference does it make?"
