Nassau lawmakers pass series of fee increases to balance county budget, help pay for new labor contracts
MINEOLA - Nassau lawmakers have passed a series of fee increases to help balance the budget, raising the costs for use of county pools, parks and golf courses, among other things.
County Executive Ed Mangano proposed the fees to help pay for new labor contracts with police and municipal unions. The measure aims to raise $15 million and it includes higher fees at county parks and golf courses.
It raises admission by $1 at county museums, and $1 at Old Bethpage Village Restoration. It also raises traffic and parking violation fees.
Some Democrats say it's nothing more than a disguised tax increase. Legislator David Denenberg says it’s the second user-fee hike in less than two years, and adds that it won't come close to covering the labor contract increases that totals $130 million.
Some argued at a Legislature meeting today that these increased fees should not be imposed on veterans and seniors.
The increases will take effect once Mangano officially signs the legislation into law.
