Two suspects have been arrested after a traffic stop resulted in the critical injury of a police officer Monday in Huntington, Suffolk County police said.
Chad Morizsan, 34, of 1 Ridings Gate, Northport, has been identified as the driver of the vehicle that struck and critically injured Second Precinct Crime Section Police Officer Nicholas Guerrero, police said.
Guerrero, 36, was in critical but stable condition in the Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit at Stony Brook University Hospital on Tuesday, police said. His partner, Heriberto Lugo, was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.
Nicholas Franzone, 22, also of 1 Ridings Gate, a passenger in Morizsan's vehicle, has also been arrested, police said.
Arraigned on multiple charges Tuesday morning in First District Court in Central Islip, Morizsan was ordered held on bail of $3 million cash or $30 million bond. Franzone was jailed on bail of $150,000 cash or $450,000 bond. Both are due back in court Friday.
The two officers from the Second Precinct Crime Section -- in plainclothes, but wearing police vests and displaying their police shields -- pulled the car over about 1:30 p.m. Monday on Partridge Lane to execute an arrest warrant, Det. Lt. Edward Reilly, commanding officer of the Special Investigations Unit of the Suffolk County Police Department, said at a news conference Monday.
"The suspect fled in his car at a very high rate of speed, striking both officers," Reilly said.
A short time later, the fleeing vehicle hit another vehicle in the Huntington area, before continuing on to Commack, where the suspects hijacked a woman's car on Dovecote Lane, according to a release issued Monday night.
The police officer run down by the fleeing car suffered a "very serious head injury" Monday, police said.
"He's in our prayers," Reilly said of Guerrero at a news conference at the Partridge Lane scene. "He's very seriously injured."
Police said Morizsan and Franzone were arrested Monday at a Target store in Central Islip after a manhunt for the suspects.
Police said Morizsan is charged with third-degree grand larceny in the theft of a 2014 Ford Explorer from the Commack area on Sept. 20, 2014. Police said Morizsan was driving the Explorer when he struck Officer Guerrero. He is also charged with assault on a police officer, leaving the scene of an incident that resulted in serious physical injury, petty larceny in the theft of gasoline, leaving the scene of an incident involving property damage, and second-degree robbery and unauthorized use of a vehicle in a carjacking after fleeing the accident scene. Police said Morizsan was also arrested on three open warrants for probation violation and petty larceny.
Police said Franzone is charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle in the carjacking incident.
Guerrero, who police said has been with the department four years, was airlifted from a nearby park to Stony Brook University Hospital and was being monitored in the hospital's Neurosurgical Intensive Care Unit.
Police Commissioner Edward Webber in a statement late Monday night called Guerrero "a very hardworking member" of the department. He said Guerrero joined the department in 2010 and was assigned to the Second Precinct Crime Section because of his "excellent interviewing skills, investigative abilities and strong ability to interact with the public.
"He is a true professional," Webber said. "Our thoughts are with him and his family and we pray for his full recovery."
Lugo was also taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated and released, police said. The Vehicular Crime Unit is also investigating, and police are asking any witnesses at the different scenes to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
Police said Tuesday "it is anticipated that further charges will be forthcoming," as the investigation by police and the district attorney's office continues.
