A police lieutenant became the first cop convicted in the NYPD ticket-fixing scandal when a Bronx judge found her guilty Wednesday of official misconduct and other charges.
Lt. Jennara Cobb, 38, faces up to a year behind bars when she is sentenced Dec. 4 in Bronx Supreme Court. Cobb was one of 16 officers indicted in the “Tix Fix” scandal.
She was convicted of divulging an eavesdropping warrant, official misconduct and obstruction of governmental administration — all misdemeanor charges.
She Justice Martin Marcus, after a two-week trial, read the three guilty verdicts without explanation, prompting exasperated sighs and obscenities from Cobb’s family and fellow cops.
“Are you kidding me?” muttered some supporters, while other cursed inside the crowded courtroom.
Cobb, who was placed on modified duty after her arrest, sat quietly during the reading of the verdicts at the non-jury trial. She did not show any emotion as the verdict was read.
Her attorney Philip Karasyk declined to comment.
Lieutenants Benevolent Association President Louis Turco said he was surprised by the quick verdict.
“We're extremely disappointed obviously,” Turco said outside the courtroom. “And we're going to vigorously appeal. I'm extremely surprised.”
Cobb's quick trial was the first of the “Tix Fix” scandal cases to finish up. More than 200 other cops received departmental charges relating to the probe.
The lieutenant, assigned to the Internal Affairs Bureau in February 2010, was convicted of warning other cops about phone wiretaps that were part of the probe.
Bronx Assistant District Attorney Donald Levin, in his opening statement, charged that Cobb betrayed her badge by telling a fellow lieutenant and a union delegate about the IAB investigation.
“She was the Super Bowl of leaks,” said Levin.
The officer at the center of the case, Jose Ramos, is currently on trial in the Bronx on charges of attempted grand larceny, attempted robbery and official misconduct.”
