Sea Cliff Woman Struck Cop on Shoulder of LIE
A Sea Cliff woman was arrested after she drove drunk and hit a Suffolk officer on the shoulder of the Long Island Expressway in Hauppauge Tuesday afternoon, then fled, Suffolk police said.
Police said Theresa Finnin-Hunt, 52, was driving her 2012 Volkswagen about 2:10 p.m. when she came upon Officer Dennis Hendrickson, who was standing on the shoulder of the LIE west of exit 56 and helping with traffic control after a crash that closed all westbound lanes of the expressway.
Police said Finnin-Hunt was driving fast when she approached Hendrickson, who signaled for her to slow down. She disregarded his signals, police said, and the Volkswagen struck Hendrickson on his right arm and hand as he tried to get out of the way.
Police said Finnin-Hunt kept driving westbound on the shoulder after hitting the officer, and she was stopped on the LIE North Service Road near Wicks Road in Brentwood a short time later.
Finnin-Hunt, of 8th Avenue in Sea Cliff, was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident with personal injury, third-degree unlawful fleeing of a police officer and reckless driving.
Hendrickson, of the Fourth Precinct Community Support Unit, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where he was treated for nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.
Finnin-Hunt was being held overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip on Wednesday.
