JMHO, but the one good thing the NYPD has over Nassau can be trivial depending on you. An advantage to the NYPD is simply the amount of police officers they hire and have on at any one time. Therefore, they are hiring frequently and many. Also, due to attrition, movement and promotions are much greater in the city simply because of the sheer numbers. If you plan to work your way up through the ranks, the city promotes far more people and often than Nassau. There are a lot of opportunities to go to special commands in the NYPD (i.e., Highway Patrol, ESU, detective bureau, Aviation, Harbor Unit, etc., etc., etc.) again due to the sheer numbers. If you plan on pushing a sector car for 20+ years (and let me make myself clear in that there's NOTHING wrong with that!) or don't care if you get promoted or assigned to a special unit, then this consideration is nil. That's why I said it depends on you. The bottom line, though, is this: I've known a ton of NYPD cops in my lifetime who would give their left arm to get to Nassau or Suffolk. I don't know any Nassau or Suffolk cops who are pining to go to the NYPD. Only the other way around. You take that for what it's worth. And while the city is finally doing better salarywise in Nassau, despite everything, you do not need to be a boss to put food on your table and have a very good lifestyle. We may not be rich but our private cars are not jalopies, our homes are nice and our kids will be able to go to college.

U can never replace city experience. In a perfect world you could work in city first & then come to Nassau but if they both start at same time, you would have to choose Nassau (even with another freeze most likely happening in 2018). As far as using a hook to get to a specialized unit, relax guy. Learn the job first. I worked many specialized units in the city (without using a hook) & loved it. I thought when I transferred to Nassau I would want to work in another specialized unit. No way! I love patrol & never want to give up chart orange.
