Disguised Man Fires on Police Officers
12/2/11 - Two cops are lucky to be alive today after a suspicious looking man wearing a fake beard and sunglasses opened fire on the officers after they tried to stop him in Jackson Heights, authorities said.
“They went to approach him and all hell broke loose – a cop’s worst nightmare,” one cop told the Post about the 3:55 p.m. shooting near the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 77th Street.
A 56-year-old limo driver was passing by and saw the cops raise their hands and gesture for the short, heavyset man who was wearing a black jacket to stop walking.
A truck driver had spotted the oddly dressed man and pointed him out to cops, a police source said.
The limo driver said he rounded a corner and that's when two shots rang out.
“As soon as they approach him, he fires at least twice,” the police source said.
The limo driver hopped out of his car to see what had happened and saw the cops ducking for cover while calling over their police radios for backup.
"The cops were nervous,” he said. “They were shaking. They were two young guys. They were scared."
He added that the officers didn't follow the suspect, but instead sought shelter behind a building.
The officers did not return fire, police said.
Additional units quickly descended on the scene and soon found the beard and sunglasses ditched a few blocks away, sources said.
Cops are still searching for the gunman.
I feel sorry for the cops they have to assist. Will they be there for them ?
Does anyone remember the cop who was involved in a gun battle a few years ago...his partner ran a block away and let this cop fight it out for himself?
