Cop Seriously Injured After Car Flew Off Brooklyn Queens Expressway
2/3/11 - A 28-year-old cop was seriously injured this morning when his car flew off an elevated section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway in a two-car smashup, authorities said.
Witnesses said the officer's 2009 silver Nissan was traveling east around 7:55 a.m. when it ricocheted off two other cars, smashed through a guardrail and flew off the roadway. The car landed 30 feet below and the crash impact deployed its airbags. Rescuers had to use a Jaws of Life machine to free the driver from the car's blood-soaked interior. The victim was concsious and talking when EMS arrived but was too badly injured to give his name, witnesses said. But sources said he's believed to be an off-duty police officer. The man was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is expected to survive, authorities said. His name has not been released.
