2 years ago this early AM, PO Pete Figoski, who could have retired 2 years earlier, but chose to stay to support his kids, was killed in the line of duty in the 75 Pct, where he did his entire career. Rest in peace brother.

He stayed on, at Hell's Crossroad's, the 75, on late tours, to put his daughters through college & to try to pass on some experience & knowledge to the rookies, fresh from Popeye's "Impact," where they learned only to crush people, with no discretion, in the name of "numbers for CompStat." At his funeral, I was struck by the numbers of people, people of color, from Brooklyn, getting off the LIRR in their Sunday best, and walking over for his funeral. And I was filled with pride when room was made for them to stand among us, or get closer to the church, and cops raided the canteens to get coffee & hot chocolate for them. That helped me remember that not everyone, anywhere, hates the police. Fair Winds & Following Seas, Brother.
