I was eleven at the time but I remember it well. One of my neighbors was killed in that crash and my father, who was on the City job, was detailed there for days. The neighbor was the brother of one of my friends and was coming home on leave after completing Naval Basic training at Great lakes. It was the first time that someone I knew fairly well was killed.

Very sad to see something like that even after the passage of time. A lot of damage but little fire. I guess there was little fuel on board those planes.

I remember the crash well. I had just gotten assigned a seat in a car (510) and the west end of the post was Elmont Road which was the glide path of them then, Idelwilde airport (now JFK). I was told by other guys on the car that once in a while, some times "things" would fall off the planes as they landed. The only "thing" I ever was involved in finding on a call was the frozen blue refuse from the toilets in a plane that was landing which fell in somebodys back yard. Another 32b…. It was a terrible loss of life in that mid air collision….
