Dear Media Mongers,
You judge us harshly for using words like "savages" and "animals" when referring to the West Indian Day Parade revelers. You'd rather show the world the colorful festive costumes and proclaim it a cultural festive occasion. I guess I will have to be the one to open your eyes and bust your bubble. Why me? Because I have been there as the sun goes down. I have worked and survived the "Barbarian Day Parade" in all of its criminal splendor and glory. I have nothing to gain or lose by telling the truth, as I am happily retired and 'no', I am not writing a book.
Yes, the colorful floats and politicians roll by shaking hands and kissing babies, but they are long gone before the first 10-13 hits the air waves.
The day begins with dancers and floats carrying steel drum bands. Then further back the "mud men". "Mud men" you say, what are mud men? I have never seen them on the news shows! Ahhhh, the ultimate indignity to a uniformed police officer is the desecration of that uniform. There are trucks in this "parade" carrying black men in tribal garb. On that truck are 55 gallon drums of mustard colored, foul smelling mud. To say that it is putrid looking is an understatement. Well, I have watched as that truck moves along the route and the "mud man" ladles out the mud; especially spewing it at police officers. This custom may be the protocol in Haiti or Ghana, but it is NOT here in New York and if you think that this endears this sect of society to police officers, you could NOT be more wrong! It exacerbates and fuels the racial tensions that already pervade our society
Most of the mainstream media has long gone, along with the beautiful little girls in colorful feather boa costumes when the real debacle begins.
It is a shocking reflection on black society and I would be remiss if I did not enlighten you.
I remember working "it" one year as a rookie sergeant. We mustered early and prepared our rosters. Supervisors were informed (by a certain Deputy Inspector) that we had to be alert to "recreational" gunfire and to caution our police officers about reacting to that gunfire and running into the crowd. We were cautioned about the potential for mass chaos. Now, if that sounds like unusual words to hear before attending a festive parade, stand by!
So, where else in polite society is "recreation gunfire" accepted as a "norm"? In some segments of the black community hearing daily gunshots and seeing young men bleeding to death in the streets has become "understandable" bordering on "acceptable". Life is cheap here in the ghettos of NYC. Respect for life, somewhere, somehow has been lost as the drug cartel mentality pervades our uneducated areas of our city. Dying and killing for "colors", drugs and cash is cause for celebration in our slums. Think about that! If the truth of that statement does not emote brutal "savagery" to you, then I have already wasted many words here!
"Shots fired" screams a young officer. The tremor in his voice runs through to the pit of your stomach. For the next few hours as the sun sinks, all you hear are "central we have a man stabbed", "central send a "bus" for two men shot", 10-13 after 10-13, "shots fired". It literally goes on for hours! Young police officers screaming into the radio as chaos surrounds them in situations where the average citizen is running away to hide, these brave, scared men and women see their lives flash in front of them. When it's all over, you shake your head and swear "I'll never work this effing detail again". Why? Because the barbarians ruled most of the night!
Yes, racism pervades our society. It comes in every flavor and color. It is fueled by ignorance and hatred and the chances of overcoming this ignorance are slim and none. It comes at you from every direction and it ingrains deeper in some. I know this, because I have seen this. Racism is an education unto itself. Police officers are no different than anyone else. It comes in "blue" also! The "problem" with us police officers is that we learn to fear no man, no evil. We speak our minds and usually our words are borne from our experiences. The comments about the parade from police officers on Facebook (and other social medias) are not racist. They may be confrontational to those that run and hide in their homes as the sun sets. They may be an affront to polite society because polite society lives with there heads in the sand and refuses to confront the rabble rousers in some communities! These comments are not born from some racial depravity. They are realistic evaluations and perceptions about scary events that happen annually on a lovely day in September.
I'd love to see someone from the media compile the crime figures that surround this festive occasion. I'd be willing to bet that the crime wave attributed to this parade far surpasses any crimes attributed to any 10 other parades combined.
Ask yourself "why is this parade not held in Manhattan?". The answer is very simple. It's because the wealthy hypocrites that reside there would not put up with the debauchery. This event is a disgrace to our city and humanity.
Cops deal with the reality of life every day on the mean streets of this city. Listen to them. Learn from them. Take a good look at life through their eyes.
These truths we hold to be self-evident!
