It seems every day with every newsrag article - Uncle Ed and Peter makes Nassau look like a joke with the lay-offs/demotions talk.
The last class of Suffolk County police recruits under County Executive Steve Levy was sworn in Monday, with the 85 recruits starting a six-month stint to prove that they have what it takes to become officers.
"Hang in there; the coming weeks are going to be tough," outgoing Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer told the class, which includes his daughter Bridget. "We expect all of you to progress and meet that challenge."
The swearing-in at Suffolk Community College's Brentwood campus begins their training, said Deputy Insp. Kevin Fallon, commanding officer at the academy.
"They'll have a very tough, academic, physical and tactical training over the next six months or so," he said.
The recruits were chosen after passing the civil service exam administered in June 2007. So far, two classes have graduated from the academy since that test was administered.
This group is the last of the three classes included by Levy in a 2010-11 hiring plan for new officers.
"Four and a half years later, you are sitting here. And it's probably been a long four and half years for all of you," Dormer said.
In addition to passing the exam, recruits also had to pass background checks, medical and physical exams, and also take polygraph tests. Academic training will include Spanish language classes.
Fallon said Bridget Dormer will be treated like any other recruit. "We don't look at her as Commissioner Dormer's daughter. She's a recruit and this is her first day. She has six months ahead of her along with the other recruits and that's the way she's going to be judged. As a recruit."
County Executive Steve Levy was not at the ceremony but he issued a statement Sunday: "These new recruits have chosen a career in which they will protect and serve their communities," he said. "They are joining one of the most effective police services units in the nation."
