Spanish cops ordered to cover tattoos, take off earrings in court, as judges can't tell them from suspects
An internal memo telling officers to clean up their appearance fueled outrage by local cops in the city of Zaragoza.
A memo about the dress and appearance of police in court has the force outraged in a Spanish city.
Spanish cops have been ordered to smarten up because judges can't tell them apart from suspects while in court.
Officers in the northeastern city of Zaragoza have been told to cover up tattoos and stop wearing earrings during hearings so they can be distinguished from the accused.
An internal memo demanding they improve their personal cleanliness was released this week, according to The Local.
But it's sparked outrage among police - who say that judges have "directly" called them "pigs."
Police union spokesman Gonzalo de Miguel said he was shocked to receive the memo as nothing about officers' dress had previously been brought up in court.
"It's an outrage to say one could be confused with another because of physical appearance," The Local reports him as saying.
"It's gone down very badly in the force, as you'd expect. Because what it says is that officers lack cleanliness and that's completely untrue," he added.
A police spokesman played down the anger, however, and said that the note was just "a simple reminder about decorum."
De Miguel is now demanding a meeting with commissioners to talk about the issue.
