(01/10/12) ROCKVILLE CENTRE - Leaders in the Village of Rockville Centre are complaining that the Nassau police department's new billing system is costing taxpayers more while providing fewer services.
Mayor Francis Murray says he wants the county to stop charging the village a "headquarters tax." Village residents are shelling out $6 million for it, he says.
The "headquarters tax" pays for police support services, including helicopters, K-9 units and other special units used for serious crimes and accidents, or other situations the small village isn't equipped to handle.
The mayor argues that the Nassau County Police Department recently cut its services so drastically that residents shouldn't have to pay as much any longer.
County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) and his office had no comment on the issue. However, Kenneth Lack, who represents the county police department, insists that the funds "ensure that life-saving services are available to the residents of Rockville Centre."
Murray says the county should do away with the hefty tab and instead bill the village only for services that have been used.
