Lighter Deflects Bullet, Saves Man in HempsteadBy Timothy Bolger on November 1st, 2011 A lighter in a 22-year-old’s pocket deflected a bullet after would-be robbers shot at him in Hempstead on Halloween night, Nassau County police said. The victim was at the corner of Morrell Avenue and Morton Street when three men tried to rob him at 9:21 p.m. Monday, police said. “When the victim tried to flee he was shot by one of the suspects in the right leg,” police said in a statement. The bullet hit a lighter in the victim’s pocket, causing it to deflect. The victim suffered a contusion on his leg and was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
