Gunfire erupted Monday night when Fifth Precinct police officers responded to a burglary in progress at a Valley Stream house, Nassau police said.
"When the officers came to the scene, the subjects began to flee and began firing shots at the officers," police spokesman Dep. Insp. Kenneth Lack said at the scene. "The officers were forced to return fire."
He said no police officers were wounded by gunfire, but some were taken to the hospital for psychological trauma.
Lack declined to say whether any suspects were in custody and whether others were wounded. He did not give further details, saying the investigation was ongoing.
The robbery was reported at 9:17 p.m.
More than 15 police cars, a helicopter and a canine unit converged on the Dana Avenue home, Nassau police and witnesses said. There were also ambulances on the street, neighbors said.
Police cordoned off the area and were seen checking a gray Infiniti not far from the home as a helicopter circled the area. Undercover police were also on the scene. Drivers in the area were stopped and checked by police.
Bernardin Fleurima, who lives a few houses down from the scene, said he was watching television when he heard loud noises. "I heard pop, pop, pop, pop," said Fleurima, pastor of a Hempstead church. "I thought it was the television at first.
"When I went out . . . cops were everywhere."
Fleurima said he also saw an ambulance with its lights on rush out of the area.

I moved from that area 10 years ago (I actually lived 4 blocks from there.) Thank God I did. It used to be a real nice place to grow up. You could walk anywhere late at night and not have to worry about anything. I'd be afraid to throw my garbage out at night now for fear of being mugged. Sucks!!
A nice town down the cr@per because of the garbage that has creeped across the boarder from NYC!!!

Back in the day, the biggest worry I had was Ed Farrar walking his LION on a leash on Linwood Circle off Henderson Ave. He wound up on the Johnny Carson TV show and also took the LION to the Court house to show the judge how tame he was. The County made him move the animal to a private zoo in New Jersey. See all the fun things we had back then!!!!

"Linwood Circle off Henderson Ave." You mean Hendrickson Ave right? I lived only a couple of blocks from there also off of Hendrickson Ave.

Ya got me rednblue76. it was Hendrickson Ave, cuts thru Valley Stream State park, the lake being on the south side ( Off Merrick Road) and the North part off Southern State P'way. It had the picnic area and the Merry Go round. I last drove the post car ( 510) in'64 so my memory gets kinda funny. Thanks for the Heads up.

I see Kenneth Lack is no Kevin Smith. If they were going to replace the Department spokesman couldn't they find someone who wasn't tongue tied?

Not to mention they replaced a Lt w/ a DI. What was the motivation behind that?

My mom grew up across the street from a guy in Queens who drove car 510 for a lot of years, but i think it was in the 1970's. He used to stop by our house once in a while to say hi.

I worked with Kenny and he's a stand-up guy; it was his first major incident, so give him a break, OK? Also, in years past, that was a DI position.
